Mark read and recommended, "The River's Tale" , by Edward A. Gargan. ISBN # 0-375-70559-7. The story of the author's year long trip from near the source of the Mekong River in Tibet to where it flows out into the South China Sea in Vietnam.
This is a wonderful book that I have just finished myself. It really gives you a big picture overview of how the river shapes people's lives in the countries it flows through.
The author also gives an excellent description of how plitical moves, policies, war and genocide have impacted the peoples of these countries. Often this is done at a very personal level, with people recounting their experiences. Some of it is pretty harrowing.
