Q-Tank questions

I think I understand the purpose/use of a Q-Tank, but lets make sure..

It's a small tank.

You put new fish in it till you're confident they're well and strong enough for the main tank(s). That way you don't get fish in your established tank(s) sick.

You pull sick fish from your established tank(s) and put them in the Q-tank. That way they're in a stress free environment and won't get other fish sick.

Because it's a small tank you can use less medication to get the required dosage.

But I'm not sure I understand how you keep the Q-Tank properly cycled!
Do you keep some fish in it all the time to keep it cycled?
If you suddenly put sick fish in it doesn't it re-cycle and cause mor
