Active Dwarf Sand Loach

My local LFS carries a lot of loaches but I am not always sure they are using common names for them. At any rate, I purchased a weather loach and what they were calling a "dwarf sand loach" from them recently. My question is about the dwarf sand loach. He has been with me a few days and sometimes sits calmly. At other times however he does a great deal of vertical swimming--up and down -- but never across the tank or around anything--just up and down like a frog surfacing for air in a rather darty quick motion. He doesn't seem to be looking for oxygen (doesn;t really break the surface) but he may be looking for a place to jump. Does this sound normal or is it a sign of distress? Thanks.
