Bulk charcoal

Does anyone happen to know a source of activated carbon that is not from aquarium sources? I managed to track down some reusable bags for $1.99 each, which is a one time investment, but the "bulk" carbon that comes from aquarium companies is priced through the roof. I would end up saving about a dollar per insert if I bought this kind of medium, and the largest container I found was only 6 litres - for an astonishing $42 CAD.
Is this stuff available from gardening stores? Air conditioning places? Pottery supply stores? Anyone know?
Where did Dr. Momfish originally get that giant bag of charcoal?
