Washed out look

What causes clowns to have that washed out look? I have had 2 clowns for about 6 months. Both about the same size and color when purchased but as they have grown, one's stripes are black and the others is more black/gray. What causes this? Water conditions are good, 7.4 ph, nitriates and nitrites good...both get a varied diet....shrimp pellets(which they love), bloodworms(which they don't really love or hate), tropical flake food and recently, zucchini(which they rip into). Is there anyway to bring color back or is this just a natural color variation?

Thanks =)
