Do hillstreams change patterns while they grow?

Hi. I've noticed the g. punctulatus changing from having many small light spots to fewer quite large spots over a year or two. I don't know but I think maybe it has something to do with maturing sexually. Now I bought two little stribed g. ctenocephalus - at least I thought so. But it seems like the patterns on their head look more like little angular stribes than spots as I see on my larger ctenocephalus. Does ctenocephalus have stribes on the head when they are small and then later in life develop spots?
