Never see my Clown Loaches

I have a 32 gallon tank with 8 clown loaches size approximately 3 inches. My question is that since having my loaches 4 months, I never see them, so I never have the opportunity to do a head count, the water parameters are normal (no ammonia) so as far as I know the 8 loaches are still alive. I have changed the light to a blue moon in hope that the loaches will come out, but still to no avail do I see them, any suggestions on how I can entice my loaches to come out when I am around? Could I add any other fish, your ideas would be appreciated. I am trying to find a book on clowns can you recommend one?
