long distance shipping: ammonia

what is the experience of folks here regarding receiving fish that have been shipped or transported for many hours...here i'm talking overnight or over 5-6 hrs. at a minimum.
cybermeez and i have been discussing how to acclimate the fish and i'm wondering if people float the bag and add tank water gradually as they would do in any short term transportation situation OR whether they merely float the bag to temp and then pour off the water and put the fish directly into the tank water as i've seen the lfs do.
my lfs suggested to me that ammonia is problematic in long term shipping situations and that the problem is increased by mixing tank water with shipping water in the bag...i think it had to do with the oxygen that gets mixed in and creating more of a burn situation....anyway if y'all who've received or transported your fish distance could respond it would be very helpful for this section of the loach book. and, btw, to me when i am in this situation at another time. : )
