Help! Kubotai lost eye

Ok, today i was playing around with my sis's new digi camera and took a picture of the healthiest kubotai in the tank. I noticed after i took the shot that the fish had a raw fleshy hole where his pupil used to be on the side exposed to the flash. Can a flash cause physical damage to a fish's eye like this or was it something else. they are in there with tetras, a molly, true siamese algae eater, madagascan rainbows, flagfish. what happened and is there anything i can do or should do to prevent it from happening again?
