Fishless Cycling?

Has anyone ever done fishless cycling? I have a 10 gal and a 29 gal and did not know about cycling. I set up my 10 gal for a betta that I took home from work because the horrible people had him in a tiny vase and just thought of him as decoration, didn't even feed him. I know much more about my tanks and fish now, but I guess my betta must of cycled the tank? I just set it up and put him in right away. I set up my 29 gal the same way, and added 2 clown loaches, so I guess they cycled that tank?

I am asking because I have just bought a 100 gal, and am doing lots of reading and research and want to know exaclty what I'm doing, for my fishies sake. The sight that I read about the fishless cycling, mentioned how hard it is on the fish that you use to cycle your tank with, that it may cause them health problems and may kill them, is this true???

I also have another question for people with planted tanks who use sand, are you able to use a substrate with the sand? Any problems with this? I'm considering using the white sillica after reading the thread on it.

Help is appreciated! Thanks!
