planting tank

I'd like to introduce live plants in my 72 gallon rainbow/loach tank. Any suggestions on which plants to choose for clowns and yo yos? Any to avoid?

Do those of you who keep live plants add CO2? I've read about making your own CO2 "kit" for the heavily planted tank. But do you, in your experience, find these necessary? I'm willing to do it, I just don't want to invest in stuff I don't actually need.

I have a half flourite half gravel substrate that I put in when I set up the tank last year thinking I might want to do live plants. And I'll increase my lighting. Any other suggestions?
