Body damage

I have had two yo-yo's, one green, one brown, for about two years. At the time I had a snail problem and my LFS had taken them in as a trade.

Last evening I noticed that the smaller of the two, the brown one, had its skin rubbed away starting at the beginning of its dorsal over both sides and stopping short of the lateral line. This was also true for the underside of the fish, as its skin was rubbed away in the same manner. The markings almost form a complete circle with the top markings.

Does anyone have a clue as to a probable cause? I am not as well versed in these fish as I should be and this is the first time this has happened since I got them.

Thanks for any replies.
