Adding current through a powerhead

Hi all,

Been thinking about finally installing a powerhead in my 55-gallon with its only objective being to produce enough current to make my clowns and other river fish happy and more at home.

Couple questions:

1. Since I won't be using it for filtration, do I need a sponge on the intake to keep it clean inside or is it prudent to just leave it open and clean the entire unit once in a while?

2. Roughly how many gallons per hour do I need to produce a nice current in a standard-shape 55-gallon tank? I'd like to produce all the current required from a single powerhead if possible.
