Hidden danger with Melafix

I've been treating my tank with Melafix, Maracyn and Maracyn II for a few days now. I woke up this morning to find all my fish gasping for air near the surface of the tank. I had noticed an oily film on the surface of the tank before, but didn't think much about it. I made an emergency water change, focusing on removing the surface oil as much as possible (holding the pithon intake upside down, near the surface). I think I'm going to toss the melafix in the garbage tonight, it doesn't seem to be doing anything other than collecting on the surface of the tank, thus preventing gaseous exchange to occur.
