Sand question

I have really been thinking about putting a fine gravel or sand in my 20 gal. I sit and watch my clowns dig through the gravel I have now, and wonder if they would like it better if I had sand in there for them. They literally pick up single pieces and throw it to the side. It's funny to watch. I could imagine what they think as they do that.

The question is, If I was to put the sand in my 20, how could I do it with out stressing all of my fish out, and where would I put them?
Should I just wait until I set up a new tank in the future to deal with the sand?

Just for the record, I don't have any real plants in this tank. I put a fresh piece of Romaine lettuce in every day for them to munch, and they lov
