Can you "stare down" clowns?

I've noticed lately that if I ignore my clowns they go inside their caves often as not, almost as if to say "If you don't watch us, we're outta here." But then if a single clown catches my attention and I really look at it for several moments, it backs away and hides. I've unintentionally evicted more clowns from my pumpkin ornament this way! Have you all noticed them to be like many other animals in which they can be stared down and will see that as aggression, or is it just me?
