Rinsing Filers -- Indefinately

If your filter media is made of plastic with nothing organic like charcoal in it, is there any reason to replace it regularly? Or can you just keep rinsing it so long as after rinsing it it looks like new?

Or maybe NOT looking like new is good as it is building up a colony of helpful bacteria... like my BIO-Wheel?

(I posted about his earlier but the posts went in a different direction and I didn't ask this specific question.)
