HELP! First fatality

Have a 20 gal tall with 4 clown loaches (1 @ 4 inches, 2 @ 3 inches, 1 @ 2 inches in length). Tank has been established with these guys for about 2 years with little or no problems. This morning, one of my medium guys was dead! Not just dead, but fins eaten off, scarred, beaten up dead. I removed the body, checked the chemistry and temp and all seems to be in order. Noticed the other medium guy is missing dorsal fin and has some scarring on tail. They are obviously beating the crap out of each other, to a sad end. Wondering if it's overcrowded in there and if now is the time to move them to a bigger house. There are 2 caves for hiding/sleeping, and three used to sleep in one, and the biggest one slept alone in the other. Any comments/ideas welcome!
