Keeping Neon Tetras

When I was a kid I had a tank with black sand and a big school of Neon Tetras. I don't remember if they lived long... that was 50 years ago!
But I always loved them and in my 20s I had them again. I don't remember this, but my ex-wife says I'd get frustrated with my fish because they would die so often.
Now going back just two years, when I inherited my present 10 gal, they still died but along with most of my other fish. I can remember that long! Haha.
Only recently have I learned about cycling a tank. When I cleaned my tank I would remove all the fish and rinse everything, sand and all, in the sink. No wonder.
Anyway, over the last year as I have been enjoying my fish but still killing them (I just found this forum 8 days ago), I was told to avoid Neon Tetras because while they can be purchased cheaply and so are easy to find in stores, they are actually very sensitive to water conditions and so are hard to keep.
So I switched to Black Neons and Glowlights and have been successful, even while my other fish have died.
Now that I am learning how to keep a tank properly (see my Profile) I am wondering should I have any problems with Neon Tetras?
I am BTW just thinking ahead for a future tank. In my current tank I love seeing my two schools of Blacks Neons and Glowlights. Don't know how they would school if I added Neon Tetras, but that'd be too many anyway.
