Anyone keeping a banana plant?

Mine after about a month in the water suddenly speeded up 10fold in growth and it's reaching for the surface (sorta like how a lily/lotus)! It's really amazing to watch and really pretty!

Got a question about it though... I've read from somewhere a while back that after it has sent a leaf to the surface the plant will soon wither and I'm supposed to clip off the top part so a new plant can grow from there. Does anyone have experience with this and is it what I should do? :)
