dark marks on new clown

I just lucked out and got three large clowns for my 85 gal. This tank has lots of rock, clay pot and mopani, silk plant hiding spots for the cichlids and sailfin pleco that live with them. I noticed a number of dark irregular blotches in the orange stripes on the sides of the largest clown the day after I got him. Can they bruise or scrape themselves wedging into tight rock crevices and does that show as a dark splotch? They seem otherwise healthy, are eating and even booted some cichlids out of a hole they wanted.
