Substrate Question

Hello Everybody!

Does anybody here have experience using both sand and pea gravel in a loachtank? I'm planning to set up a big tank using sand, but have some concerns such as:

1)Sand scratches the glass. I've done it to a 20 long while cleaning the sides.

2)Sand floats around in the water column and gets sucked into the filter.

3)I'm going to go heavy on the rocks. I know these will grind the sand and scratch up the bottom pane.

I'm figuring that if I use sand and pea gravel, the sand will sift to the bottom and the gravel will sift to the top portion. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
