new guy needs some advices (or flamming?!)

I'm new to the hobby and got a 5.5 gallon tank few weeks ago. After a lame attempt of keeping a figure 8 puffer in there (the poor thing died within a week), I decided to keep some hardier fishes.

Right now I got 3 black skirt tetras (1-1.5 inch), 2 kuhli loaches (1.5-2 inches), and 2 clown loaches (1.5 inch) in there (along with 2 small gold fishes that are temporarily staying in there. They seem to be very healthy and living happily.

So, do you guys see a very terrible crowding problem? (Like they gonna die eventually due to over crowding?) Or I'll be fine for a while until they grow a little?

Actually, I want to get a bigger tank but I'm terribly broke right now. Has anyone of you build you own fish tanks? How much it costs and is it practical? (I got lots of free time this month)

That's it for now, thanks a bunch!
