Paint Fumes

I have a 20 gallon guppy tank with 3 Kuhli loaches. We are getting a bigger tank in October after we get our new couches and paint that level of our house. I can't move a large aquarium while we are rearranging the furniture, and I don't want to expose those fish to paint fumes. How can I protect my guppies and Kuhlis when we paint? That tank is in the kitchen which is on the same floor but probably will not get painted. And could I get small clown loaches now for that tank if they will move to a bigger tank in 4 months? I see them at the LFS at about 1.5 inches. I sure could use some help with my snails, and I never see chained or zebra loaches at our LFS's.
