Temperature and Sand for Kuhlies

I know they prefer "cooler" water, but would they be OK at say between 80 and 82? The reason I'm asking is because the summer is coming and I need to know if I should add a small fan to their new set up.

On another note I was at a LFS today and bought them some sand. It's sillica sand made by Estes. I also got some small sized gravel to mix with the sand. My question is two fold: Is sillica sand appropriate for them (it's made up of tiny square ganules...not tumbled and smooth) and will it mean more sillicates in my tank? I suppose I could go with just small pea gravel, but it would make burrowing difficult.
