Aquarium Safe Bark?

I am starting to build the scenery for my show tank, and I would like to hide the overflow stacks.

I was thinking about taking a 3-4" diameter PVC pipe and siliconing several strips of cork bark to it (vertical strips, to look like natural bark). The visual effect (I'm hoping) would look like a tree growing out of the substrate. I will use smaller diameter pipes (1-2") with smaller strips around them to look like roots poking around the slate. This way, they can be hollow and provide extra caves as well.

Can anyone offer any advice on this? I'm trying to find an attractive way of hiding the pipes.. Thats the final objective
