Sudden loach death

I had five B. macracantha, two for over 9 years, three for 2 years, living together seemingly happy enough in a 1 metre tank. A few days ago one of the younger ones died.

There had been no signs of distress earlier, no indications subsequently among the other four. There were no marking on the dead fish and the only odd circumstance was the presence of conspicuous white mucus which detached as I netted the corpse, otherside eyes and body surface were clear, colour faded slightly but markings still pronounced.

At a little over 4 inches, the fish was probably the largest of the five, so bullying/aggression does not seem relevant. Any ideas or insights, any concerns for the others?
