Horse-faced loach gravel size

It has been mentioned here at LOL that the Horse-faced loach (HFL) is a hillstreamer. I've been reading around, and other sites (not that I really trust them over LOL) say that the HFL likes a fine, sandy bottom to burrow in. Are sandy bottoms typically found in fast-moving water? I had always envisioned a courser, gravelly bottom. With what sort of substrates are people keeping their HFLs?
