Clown loach tapping?

I've got a couple of 3-3.5 inch clown loaches in my 135 tank. They eat tons of snails, I think their entire diet is the snails. So I know they make some noise trying to get into the shells. But there is another sound they make when I clean the tank or make too much noise in the tank area. They seem to be picking up pebbles from the bottom of the tank and tapping them agains the larger rocks. Anyone know what this is? Are they trying to scare me away? Or is is a warning to other loaches in the area that there might be danger?
