Loach Growth and Pecking Order

In the past few months I've noticed something interesting going on with my 3 Clown Loaches. I got all 3 of these guys at the same time last February. They were all the same size (about 2 inches) and healthy, but they are clearly not all growing at the same rate. One is getting big fast, from 2 inches to about 4 1/2 in 7 months, the second is up to about 3 1/2 inches and the third is only 2 1/2.

The biggest of the bunch seems to be the dominant fish (he has dibs on the log). The other 2 seem to be on relatively equal footing (or finning as the case may be).

Is growth rate related to pecking order in the school or is something else going on?
