ichthyology basics

My last post reminded me how little I know about this subject. I've got the material I need to find out the proper names for anatomy etc, butcoming from my background of History (read:essays), I am guessing there are rights and wrongs when it comes to citing aspects of ichtyology. By this I mean things like whether latin names should be in caps, how to abbreviate, what some common abbreviations are, syntax, things like that. If you've lost me by now, hey, you're in my boat too!
If you do know what I'm writing about, don't waste your time providing me with the info, just let me know where I can get it from (preferably on the web).

Thanks for any help
again :)
