Gold fish sucking air, advice

Yesterday I bought 2 goldfish. They are small
both about 2 inches from nose to tail. Panda and an Oranda.

I emptied the cories from my 40 gallon tank. Did a 50% water change, and the 2 goldies are in there alone. No plants. Aqua Clear filter has been running for over a year. Cleaned it with water change.

They are swimming at the surface gulping air. Thought it might be the heat, so I did another 50% water change today. An hour later they are at the surface gulping air.

Is there something wrong with them? I see no other symptoms of disease.

Thanks, hope this is worrying about the new baby syndrome. Just after the 125 gallon nightmare I'm trying to be careful.
