Weather loach availability

I have just been told by a local aquatic shop,in SW England that weather loaches (dojos to all you guys in the US!) have a supply problem. Apparently they have become very popular (even more popular than they were before) in the far East as food. The fish importers cannot match what the restaurants are paying. I am devastated! How can they eat them - I saw Michael palin on TV on one of his many tours, trying out loach soup - they boil them alive.

I would be interested to hear from anyone, in the UK or elsewhere, who has noticed a drop in the numbers for sale.
They could become an endangered species, or even die out altogether, which would be awful!
