Need advice on an algae grazer to keep with Clowns

I have five clowns from 3" to 8". All have been together for about two years. I cannot keep algae eating fish in the tank. I have had many small sized plecos, hillstream loaches or stingray plecos (depending on where you read). I have been staying on the small side to avoid a clown loach spawn from being eaten (wishful thinking). They all end up half eaten and dead. Clowns are thriving so I do not think it is the water quality. But I have a hard time believing the clowns are killing them. A friend suggested snails to eat the algae but I always read about people avoiding snails, besides the clowns will eat them.
Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions.
