botias and substrate...

hi. i know certain sharp substrates can be abrasive to the barbels of botia species, but what happens if there is no substrate at all? i want to paint the bottom of the tank black to help them feel secure, but can botia be truly happy without having some kind of substrate to grub through??

has nayone tried this themselves? i dont mind hearing about speculation, but i am mostly after hard facts...

i think i am likely to give it a try and just carefully observe for any complications....

thanks in advance,
