Malaysian Trumpet Snails Question

In reading prior posts, I came across a recommendation to use Malaysian Trumpet snails to clean-up the crud in the substrate and cultivate the soil. Because they burrow and are live-bearers, I read that not too many of them should be eaten by my clown loaches. I asked my lfs if he could get some, and he said that he wouldn't recommend them because they'll eat my plants--roots and all. Is that true?
