my loach is dying, I think

I've got what I think is a banded loach - he's dark brown, long and slim, with lots of thin black stripes and a light colored belly. Since this morning he's been laying on his side in the tank - my local dealer said if he's a clown, this is normal, but he's not. He is normally very reclusive, hiding in plants. He flips himself over on his belly as normal and swims at bit at times, but I've noticed that his mouth is wide open. Could he have a piece of gravel stuck? I feel bad for him and don't know what to do. It's a freshwater tank and all of my fish are breeding and healthy and I believe the water is good.
