Driftwood question inside...

I have a piece of driftwood that I used to have in my Discus tank to soften and make the water more acidic. The problem is that it leaves the water with a yellow tint. Does anybody know of a way to permanently rid the wood of it's ability to color the water? I've been soaking it in a bucket of water for days and it is a little less colorful, but it seems like I could go on for months trying it this way. Thanks for any help. Steve
