shells in tanks

We just returned from a Florida trip where I picked up a lot of shells on the beach. I would love to put some of these shells in my 10 gallon tank (1 clown loach, 1 plecko, 3 serpae tetras) and wonder if it is ok to just put the shells in the tank or prepare them some way first (I was advised to soak them in a diluted bleach solution to get rid of the smell) or avoid putting shells in the tank. Any advice would be welcome.
