Filter modifications?

Hi all,

I've been thinking lately ... this sand vacuuming is for the birds. I have founds lots of feces that simply would float right up if there was any noticeable current in my tank. I have a Penguin 330, and it's on one side of my tank littered with plastic plants, etc; I almost never vacuum there because I don't have to. But the other half of my tank is ... stagnant. Waste quickly works its way onto the substrate and hence my dilemma. I don't want to get another filter to help out my 330. So...

Anyone try to ... expand the plumbing on a power filter? I'm thinking something like PCV attaching to the bottom of the down tube, shooting it out to the stagnant end of the tank and attaching the intake strainer thing to the end. What do you all think? My chief concern is that it might reduce the water throughput; any experience there?
