Clown Loach

I have 2 clowns that are very shy. I have them for over 7-8 months. They get out of their hiding place only at night and never when the lights are turned on. If I feed them with the lights on they don't get out to eat no matter how hungry they are. I have lot of plants that causes shades so there is no so much lighting for them (they stay at the bottom). I have seen other people tanks that have lot of lighting and the clowns gets out normally and they even eat from the surface, they are not afraid of any movements. What I can do? I can't see them at all and I can't enjoy them that much :(
