Fran, I am definitely NOT a plant expert, but I've been having success with Anubias (not cheap though) and all crypt type plants without upgrading the lighting in my small 10 gallon tanks. They just don't seem to need that much light. I fertilize with a liquid fertilizer once a week, a day after changing the water. They are very pretty in the tank I think you should just take a deep breath and give a go. I just bought one plant to begin with to see how it went and now both my 10 gallons are pretty well planted. Tried my larger tanks but the cichlids said "No Way"! They would rip them up as fast I put them in, Oh well!
