Question about nitirite/water changes

Hey everyone,

Well, I think I may have asked too much of my filter at one time. I've just added in the last week, 3 clowns, and 3 otocinclus.

So far since Saturday I've done two 20-25% water changes. My nitrite reading is 0.1 (acceptable), however, in the past, I've always had less that 0.1. So, my question is, when I do water changes, do I always have to siphon the gravel more than once a week? Or how about this: I will siphon gravel weekly with the weekly water change, but the w.c. I'll be doing halfway through the week,I won't siphon gravel--just change water. Suggestions? Opinions? Thanks.
