Probably the thing that makes the tank look the cleanest is the fact that, every couple of months, I take the rocks and log out of the tank, and soak them in bleech to kill the algae. Then, I scrub most of the remaining algae off. Weekly water changes certainly don't hurt, either.

The PVC pipe is about 2 inches across, so it's not that big. Just big enough... My gravel there is big enough that, once I move it in place, it doens't drift around too much, only when the loaches are digging it in. I probably should switch over to some finer gravel in that tank, though, I think they might like it a bit better. Especially the weather loach... I'm not sure how well a semi-buried tube with work with sand, sin
