Optimal tank design for loaches!

This posting concerns a 180 Gal tank I observed in a fish store. The tank contained a group of 50-100 loaches (Pakistani, Clown, and a small group of others). They distributed themselves between two large rock formations at both sides of the tank. The tank water was straight from the tap (medium hard) and a peat extract was added to the water. The major planting was a heavy concentration of Sagitaria, and Jave moss. There was definite schooling behaviour of both the Clowns and the Pakistani loaches. Both moved in large groups to forage, and at feeding time there was a definite pecking order. The two groups of loaches tended to interact well and even intermixed without fights breaking out.
