Pangio/Acanthophthalmus food and shyness

I have 5 (well, at least 5 went in - I never see more than two at a time and even that's quite rare) Pangio anguillaris (eel loaches) in a 300 L (80 US gallon?) planted tank with soft, peaty substrate.

I wonder whether they are getting enough to eat because I've realized that the other fish (pearl gouramies and rasbora espei) eat the flake even in the darkness. Twice I have tried giving them special loach flakes but both times it seemed that the water became cloudier. At any rate, are there any nice treats I can give them? Preferably something live that will sink to the bottom and hide before the other fish get them.

Perhaps hide the food in special enclosures with anguillaris-size entraces? Any DIY ideas?
